Rally and Lobby Day for Puerto Rican Families
February 28 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join the CT Puerto Rican Agenda, Make the Road CT, and our allies and supporters for a day of mobilization to support Puerto Rican families. There are thousands of new families displaced by Hurricane Maria coming to Connecticut towns and cities that are themselves strained to address decades of economic neglect.
The safety and well-being of hurricane victims should not be used to score political points between our state and federal governments. Our families should not be ignored and abandoned by our elected officials who ignore the needs of thousands who continue to flee the island in the hopes of finding relief. It is long overdue that we come together and show the power our community’s ability to show up in numbers and pressure our elected officials to act.
The schedule for the day is:
10 am: Lobby training and policy priorities(HB5082) overview (Room 310,Capitol)
11-1pm: Meetings with elected officials
1-3pm: Rally on Capitol Steps (back of capitol building)
The primary focus of the rally is to call for a comprehensive plan to aid and assist the many families who have arrived in the Hartford area from Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and other Caribbean islands following the devastating hurricanes which swept through the area last year.
While local volunteers, charitable organizations and other institutions have been able to provide temporary emergency assistance to the new arrivals, a more permanent plan needs to be developed by the government to help them forge a new life here in Connecticut. Representative Juan Candelaria has introduced HB5082, which would request funding to support school districts, non profit agencies and provide rental assistance for families to secure long term housing.
The rally at 1 pm will feature families who have recently moved to Connecticut due to Hurricane Maria, the organizations working to help them transition,Allies like 32BJ/AFL-CIO and CT Students for a Dream, and members of the CT Black and Puerto Rican Caucus.
We will spend the morning reaching out to our State elected officials to educate them on the needs of our community, and why there is an urgent need for a comprehensive state support package passed in this session.
